Mel Creeley, president and CEO of Tri-County Care Systems Inc. and East Liverpool City Hospital announced today that he intends to retire, effective on or about July 3, 2010.
Creeley made the announcement at the regularly scheduled board of trustees meeting on Wednesday, and informed employees today.
“Thank you for the honor of serving in these roles for over 20 years and for the privilege of knowing and serving with you, a fantastic management team, and the many fine employees, members of the medical staff and the many valuable volunteers,” Creeley stated. “Thank you for these past many years and I wish you good fortune as you serve the corporation and community in the future.”
Creeley came to ELCH as vice president of operations in May 1988 and was named CEO in March 1989
Before hired at ELCH, he was the CEO of Kelsey Memorial Hospital in Lakeview, Mich., from 1982-88. He also held administrative positions at McCready Memorial Hospital and Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield, Md., Cole Hospital in Champaign, Ill., and Hanover General Hospital in Hanover, Pa.
Creeley is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), a credential awarded by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), and is quite active with the Ohio Hospital Association and the American Hospital Association.
He earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Bryant College, Smithfield, R.I. (summa cum laude, 1973), and his master of arts in healthcare administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (1975), where he majored in acute care facility administration. He completed a residency at York Hospital in York, Pa.
Creeley also served four years (1965-69) in the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of staff sergeant.
Board Chair Mike Parkes noted that the board is forming a committee to help in the search for Creeley’s successor.
“Since first joining the board of trustees in 1993, I’ve seen Mel guide the hospital through two major renovations that have improved patient care and made new services available to our community,” Parkes commented. “And his leadership has played a key role in significantly improving the financial position of the hospital to ensure continued viability for the community for years to come. He will be a tough act to follow.”
