Blood Services
The Laboratory is affiliated with American Red Cross Blood Services, Johnstown (Pa.) Region, for all blood products needed by hospital patients. Weekday deliveries of whole blood and specialized blood products are made from the Red Cross Beaver, Pa., office. City Hospital uses about 1000 units of red blood cells and 800 other blood products annually. The Red Cross relies on volunteer donors, never paying individuals for blood donations. The agency employs sophisticated testing technology and redundant systems to eliminate machine and human error, assuring a high degree of safety. Services include autologous donations (blood drawn from an individual in advance of surgery to be transferred back into the same person) and directed donations (compatible blood donated specifically to be transfused into a particular patient).
