Catheterization/
Angiography
Using Cardiac Catheterization, cardiologists can look for blockages in the individual
arteries that carry bood to the heart muscle. This test injects quantities of dye through
a narrow tube inside the heart while taking x-rays from the outside. This allows the cardiologist
to see a clear picture of the arterial blockage. Knowing the exact locations of clots in the
arteries helps the physician better advise the patients about the best way to treat cononary
artery disease: medicines, surgery, angioplasty, or stents.
Periphal angiography is an x-ray of your arteries called an angiogram (also known as an ateriogram).
Peripheral angiograms are most commonly done to test the arteries which supply the blood to the head
and neck or the abdoment and legs. Because arteries do not show up on ordiniary x-rays,
arteriograms utilize dye, which is injected into the arteries to make them visible on radiographs.
Problems with the artieries may lead to a variety of complicatons such as stroke, hypertension,
or leg pain. The treatment your condition may require will be determined by your angiogram.
