Surgery
Surgery is located on the third floor of the East Wing. Inpatient
and outpatient surgeries are performed in five surgical suites and
one endoscope room, which are fully equipped to Joint Commission standards.
Surgeons on staff perform an ever-increasing wide variety of surgeries
(see list here). Surgical nursing personnel
are experienced and well trained, and the department continually upgrades
its services and equipment.
State-of-the-art laparoscopic equipment allows less invasive procedures,
which may result in faster recoveries, less scarring and discomfort,
and improved outcomes. Inpatients return to the post-anesthesia recovery
unit (PACU) following their surgery, while outpatients return to the
outpatient preparation and recovery area. In both areas, patients
receive constant attention from the nursing staff until they are ready
to return to their rooms or to be discharged.
Chemotherapy
treatments, blood transfusions, IV therapy, IV injections, bone marrow
extractions and pain management therapy are done in the outpatient
surgery treatment room, part of the outpatient preparation and recovery
area.
A volunteer
surgical hostess provides refreshment to family members in the surgical
waiting area, and relays information to them concerning the patient's
status. Hostesses are members of the City Hospital Auxiliary.
Consultation
rooms are available in the surgical waiting area so the surgeon may
confer privately with the family. Many types of surgeries and procedures
are performed at East Liverpool City Hospital, including general (abdominal),
gynecological, urological, eye, ear-nose-throat, orthopedic, vascular
and thoracic. Abdominal surgeries often may be done with the less
invasive laparoscope.
