Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program

Steven M. Swain, MD, FAAFP became the Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program in July 2023. He has been involved in medical education since he graduated from residency in 2005. He is a native Ohioan, from Sterling – which is west of Akron and south of Cleveland. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Combined Science from Youngstown State University, and his medical degree from the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in 2002. In 2005, he completed his residency training at the Western Reserve Health Education (WRHE) Family Medicine Program and built a very successful private practice upon graduation.

In addition to his Program Director and practice commitments, Dr. Swain holds appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, Adjunct Professor for Clinical Medicine at American University of Antigua College of Medicine, in Antigua and Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor Department of Primary Care at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Athens, Ohio. He was Associate Program Director of the WRHE Family Medicine Program from April 2012 through August 2020 and the Steward Healthcare Network Local Board President from October 2017 through August 2020.

His professional memberships include the American Academy of Family Physicians, Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, Mahoning Valley Medical Society, and the Christian Medical & Dental Associations. His honors include being named the Chief Resident in his final year of residency, 2006 NEOMED Outstanding Teacher of the Year award, the Faculty Attending of the Year in 2013, 2017 and 2019, and being an Eagle Scout.

Dr. Swain enjoys the full spectrum of Family Medicine with specific interests in diabetes, advanced lipid management, cardiovascular health, and preventive medicine. He enjoys spending time with his family, especially his wife and two children. He enjoys traveling, snorkeling, and is an avid Ohio State and Cleveland sports fan. He loves the Canfield Fair and has been an active volunteer in the medical building there over the past 20 years. He is passionate about mission work and helping the underserved. Together with his wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, they operate a nonprofit called Brown Horse Projects which currently operates a fully functional primary care clinic in Balan, Haiti. He is an active saltwater aquarist and the self-proclaimed biggest Larry Bird fan you will ever meet.
