Autism Support Group

The support group works with the parents, family members and professionals to increase their level of understanding of the disorders associated with Autism. Through better understanding, there is hope that the program will improve your everyday interaction to people afflicted with Autism.

Promoting Long Term Benefits

Learn about the proper body motions used for performing daily activities that prevent injury, improve socialization skills, and enable patients to overcome physical obstacles. All of these therapies incorporate quality of life as a part of its objective.

Access to Better Equipment Leads to Better Care

Use the same equipment available at a YMCA to perform your therapy by using the swimming pool, weight lifting machines, free weights, treadmills and the walking track.

Aquatics

Aquatic exercise therapy is the union of aquatic exercise and physical therapy. It is a comprehensive therapeutic approach that uses aquatic exercises designed to aid in the rehabilitation of various conditions. Aquatic therapy uses the principles of water (buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity, water resistance, and laws of motion) to help assist the patient in their rehabilitation.

RiverValley Health Partners at The Therapy Center can apply aquatic therapy for all types of injures, disorders, and diseases for all ages. Water therapy benefits people with muscular, bone, or joint conditions. This includes, but is not limited to people with: strains, sprains, stable pre and post-operative conditions such as knee and hip replacements, joint instabilities and degenerative diseases such as Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and degenerative joint/disc disease. Some cardio-respiratory and neurological involvements, such as COPD and spinal cord injuries can also benefit from aquatic therapy. It is also very useful in the rehabilitation of sports related injuries. A doctor’s prescription is necessary, but you are just a phone call away at the Therapy Center.

Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorders Our licensed Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy staff work closely to treat children with sensory needs, including those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD.) Our sensory programs include treatment techniques and equipment specific to a child’s individual needs, including tactile, auditory and vestibular (balance) systems. Our staff has experience and training in the latest research and evidence based practices with a team approach to facilitate the development of gross and fine motor skills, as well as cognitive and communication skills for a child to function better at home and in the community. Since a child’s sensory systems include vestibular, auditory, visual, and tactile (touch) develop interactively and many skills depend on the other, a team approach is crucial when training parents and caregivers.

Dizziness/Vestibular

Vestibular rehabilitation is a physical therapy program designed to evaluate and treat people with dizziness and imbalance. Most often people with vestibular disorders complain of dizziness, unsteadiness, queasiness, sensation of spinning and falls. Some common symptoms for a person with a vestibular disorder include:

  • Queasiness or sickness to stomach with quick head turns (i.e. at grocery store)
  • Difficulty watching moving objects
  • Difficulty looking down at a moving surface such as an escalator
  • Difficulty and queasiness with positional changes such as laying down, sitting up, or rolling over in bed
  • Vestibular exercises have been proven an effective treatment for dizziness/vestibular disorders, resulting in decreasing a person’s risk of falling and improving quality of life. Individualized treatments are performed two or three days a week for an hour with one of our certified clinicians. Treatment lasts for 4 weeks for a total of 8-12 sessions.

Parkinsons

The LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) Loud program is an evidence-based voice program for people with Parkinson Disease and other neurological disorders. This program was created to improve a person’s speaking volume, since a soft, weak voice that is difficult to hear is common in patients with Parkinson disease. The program also involves the generalization of the loud voice into daily communication, which helps patients maintain the new loud voice well after the therapy program has ended.

This is an intensive program takes place four times weekly over four weeks, for a total of 16 sessions. Each session is about 50-60 minutes in length and consists of specific daily tasks as well as hierarchical speech loudness tasks. These “high effort exercises” strengthen the vocal cords without causing harm. Daily home practice assignments are also given, which are essential for good carryover of the loud voice into the patient’s specific communication environments. In order to get started in the program, a doctor’s prescription is needed. Also, a voice evaluation from an ENT (ear, nose and throat doctor) is also required to make sure there are no voice problems that would prevent a patient from performing the required exercises.

LSVT BIG is an exercise program that was developed for the treatment of Parkinson Disease (PD) and other neurological disorders. Persons with PD often have difficulty with walking/balance and performing everyday functional tasks such as getting in/out of bed, dressing, writing, and showering. The BIG exercise program has been researched and is shown to improve everyday functional tasks in a person with PD. This is exciting because it proves that people with PD can get better with exercise.

Treatment involves a four day a week commitment at one of our outpatient clinics. Sessions last one hour and are individualized. Treatment lasts for four weeks for a total of 16 sessions.
